About us

ᑕᐣᓯ, Taanishi,  ᐊᐃᓐᖓᐃ, Hello,

My name is Cody McDonald. I am a Michif person living on Treaty One Territory. I decide to start Mishkum Clothing and Designs back in 2021, after learning that today, there are over 70  indigenous languages spoken in Canada. However, only 3 of them Inuktitut, Cree, and Ojibwa are considered to have a sustainable level of speakers by UNESCO. The rest of these languages are in danger of dying off within this century. I have always been passionate about languages and have long understood their importance. Hearing that my community’s language Michif will soon be extinct as well as many others. Inspired me to design different products featuring Indigenous languages on them. Today, I am focused on designing more products in even more languages and trying to connect more with new people who share the same passion for preserving and protecting Indigenous languages. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me with the contact form using the link below.

ᒦᑴᐨ, Maarsi, ᓇᑯᕐᒦᒃ, Thank You!

Languages

Currently, I have created products featuring Cree, Michif, Inuktitut (Romanization), and Inuktitut (Syllabics).

Cree

Cree is an Algonquian language family with over 96,000 speakers, primarily located in Canada, specifically in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec, and it is known for its diverse dialects.

Michif

Michif, a unique language resulting from the blending of French and Cree, is spoken by an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 speakers, primarily in Métis communities located in Canada and the United States, particularly in regions such as Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and North Dakota. It is considered a mixed language within the Algonquian language family.

Inuktitut

Inuktitut belongs to the Inuit-Aleut language family, spoken by over 30,000 people primarily in the Canadian Arctic regions of Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

Location

Mishkum Clothing and Designs was founded and operated on Treaty One territory. Which is located in Manitoba, Canada.

Meaning of mishkum

mishkum is a Michif word that means "discover". I chose this name as I wanted this to be a place for people to go and discover more about the Indigenous languages of Canada. As well as a place for people to go and reconnect more with their heritage language.
